Help, gotta change front suspension bush :-S Empty
PostSubject: Help, gotta change front suspension bush :-S   Help, gotta change front suspension bush :-S EmptySun Jun 10, 2012 12:35 am

Hi guys, just noticed there is no relevant section for this (maybe mechanical & tuning section) lol annnyyyyywayyyy.....

I've gotta change the 'top strut mount bush' i think it may be called, I have removed the hub nut, calipers etc, drop links and loosened the nut holding the hub to the bottom of the strut, I know i'm probably gettin the names wrong but thats not the important bit lol, basically I just wanna know what else I need to get the strut out and change the bush.

Pretty sure all I need to do now is get some spring compressors, remove the strut, change the bush and re-assemble possibly needing a lump hammer to get the hub back on the strut?? Or do I need to piss about with the cv joints too please tell me I dont?!?

I am fairly mechanically minded and quite competent but sometimes I need someone there with me to bounce my theorys off and make sure I'm doin it right so thats you guys lol I know you'll help if u can lol!

Thanks in advance guys :-D
Any more info needed let me know!

Andy

yeah, what car you doin it to?
if its the escort your basicllay there, and your cv joints should be fine just take the drive shaft nut of and nock the shaft in, then you should be able to get the strut of, it should have two nuts on the top, one of them holds a sort of plate over the top of the wing once thats of it should come out, then using spring compressors take the pressure of the bushes and you should be able to remove the top mount bushes of the strut leg, then refit your new ones, its not a massive job but if its on the scort then lube the hell out of everything, wd40, cos ford gear is renound for ripping threads of when your disasembling, when you re-build it all, use some copper grease (i swear by that stuff) and should you ever want to strip it for another job, then it makes it come apart dead easy Smile

Sorry mate should have said, no not the escort or passat lol, its my mums peugeot 1007, doesnt seem to be any nuts holding the strut on, just one nut right at the top of the strut itself in the middle which I imagine is to take the spring off, literally looks like the strut is held in by the hub and the weight of the car which seems strange to me but there are no nuts on either side (front suspension)does this sound right, I'd imagine the setup is much like any peugeot of the same generation (**7) but can't be sure lol

Yeah, that's normal, it'll be double nutted take the nut of that you can see on top. The leg should then come of, they'd never build it to rely on the weight to hold it together, otherwise everytime you drove over a speed bump the suspension would fold under the car lol

Thought not lol did seem strange, I see, that does make sense so it's 2 nuts on the same thread? One to secure it to the chassis and the other to secure the coil on? Thats probably why I couldnt get it to budge lol

Well I have made slow progress, good job my mum doesn't need the car at the minute lol, I took it all apart today, it is the bush so I have ordered it, but when I pulled the hub down to take the strut off I managed to pull the drive shaft out of the gearbox slightly, but enough to lose about 200ml gearbox oil No have I now made the car un-driveable until I top it up? how much do I need to top it up to? How do I make sure the driveshaft is back in properly or is it as simple as push it in?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing........

Thanks for any help tho,

Andy

Well its not in drivable, realy it needs topping up though, the shaft should push back in the back fully, and you should here /feel a clink sound as these a spring type clip in the outside of the drive spline that sits inside the diff drive cup, just shove it back in and then add some more gearbox fluid to the box, watch out for gearbox fluid, it stinks and its a Bugger to clean up, use some cola, the acid in cocacola removes the oil from concrete etc, hope that helps mate, oh yeah if the fluid is to low in the box it will whine quite loud, I think that there is a way to checl the oil level in those vids but I don't know how, jared might know, if it was me I'd just stick two cup fulls in (approx 200ml) and see what it drives like alien
