Can anyone help with an alloy refurb? Empty
PostSubject: Can anyone help with an alloy refurb?   Can anyone help with an alloy refurb? EmptyMon Sep 17, 2012 8:57 pm

Pickin up some new wheels for the car on wednesday, some rs8 reps 17", got em for an absolute steal and I wanna change the colour, they have a few kerb marks and oxidising of the laquer etc so theyre gonna need a full rub down before i spray em i may need to do a bit of filling too.

First question: What is the best/easiest/cheapest way to strip em down? Aircraft paint remover dip? Nitromors dip? Or am I just better gettin a grinder with a polishing wheel?

Second question: Does anyone have any of the tools needed i could borrow/rent for the duration of the job? I.e a grinder if I'm gonna use one and a compressor as I wanna do it properly not doin a rattle can job lol.

Any help would be appreciated and I'm not gona take the piss, I do wanna do the job myself as I wanna learn how to spray properly but wouldn't turn down a bit of help doin the job.

Thanks guys,

Andy

ay up andy,

i do the odd set of wheels now and again,

jet wash them
trichloride was the best stuff but now band from sale unless in certain industrys so soak in nitromors
jet wash again
bead blast em
jet wash again
take high spots of with a 2nd cut file
then go over with a fine file
then blend with a poliflap wheel, going through the grades to a medium grit
then rub down with paint prep
then primer with zinc primer
again with the primer
rubdown with medium grit wet and dry
paint prep
then spray using gun/compressor and good automotive paint
another coat
then laquer, when laquering heat the can and the wheels to give good adhesion

job done

hope this helps, i can sort you bead blasting for cost, and you could spray at my work for a few beers

check the for sale or suppliers link on here

cheers mate, very interested had a look at your thread, just found out they have 2 very smll cracks (check my latest thread for details) i noticed u said u dont weld structural damage, does a small hairline crack count as structural damage? Sorry if i sound thick but wasnt sure if u meant big cracks or u won't weld alloys full stop lol.

Dunno about the rad repairs as they're a wheel and tyre specialist but it's actually a mate that does the welding and he's done a good job on it, I'm sure u can ask if they do rad repairs an I can't see y not? Ring em an aask for John, tell him andy mac put u on to him, he might not know my surname lol but tell him andy with the passat and he'll know lol
